In September this year, Mapua School celebrated its 90th Jubilee.

The following contains some excerpts from the display, created to celebrate the occasion. Many thanks to Lori Winter for collating the huge amount of historical information and creating the display for our school foyer.

The school commenced on the 25 September 1915 in the sitting room of Mr Higg’s home with five pupils - Bill, Phemie and Connie Higgs, Margret Weyergang and Myra Wakefield.

Mr. C Higgs and his family arrived in Mapua on the 15 June 1915. His three children brought the number eligible students up to 5. Mr Higgs made representations to the Nelson Education Board and Miss Rona Huffam was appointed the first teacher of Mapua. Mr. Seniors old barn was procured as the centre of education and this also served as a place of worship on Sundays.

In 1918 The first school building was built and opened on the 03 August. An extract from the “Evening Mail” under Mapua News about this time is interesting. “The new school so recently built for us is already full, 29 children and 1 teacher.”

In 1919 a small library of capitally selected books was obtained for the school.
